Microsoft
Inclusive + Accessible Design
Microsoft’s Package Design team is redefining what accessibility looks and feels like, a design for everyone, regardless of ability, to open, use and enjoy with ease.
At Indigo Slate, I led the creative direction for two companion films that bring this mission to life: Accessible Design and Inclusive Design. The films debuted at London Design Week as part of a keynote speech and are now live on social as part of Microsoft’s ongoing story about inclusive and human-centred design.
As the accessibility video focuses on the physical package, the inclusivity video is based on everyday interactions.

Accessible Design
The film highlights Microsoft’s Surface Pro packaging and its accessibility features, such as no-tools tear strip, one-finger lift, tactile markers and high-contrast labelling; and communicates functionality and craft through thoughtful engineering.

Inclusive Design
This film tells the story of everyday interactions for people with and without disabilities using Microsoft’s Inclusive Design icons. It showcases how every moment can be one of ease or struggle, depending on whether you are experiencing a disabled mismatch in interaction.

Visual Development
The first two images below were the starting point for both films. Although visually apart from one another, the two films live in the same world.
Accessible Design uses realistic 3D product renders with dramatic lighting to convey the craft and thoughtfulness behind it, while Inclusive Design takes a human-centric approach with iconography style and minimal color accents.
